While the performance of these funds over that one year period is extraordinary, please note the following:
R four of the top seven funds had not been ranked by Morningstar,
R three of the top six funds are relatively new funds (less than 3 years old),
R half of the funds are Macquarie funds, yet
R the Macquarie funds all lost ground over the three months to 30 September 2007, the others didn’t.
Challenger China Share Fund
The top performing Challenger China Share Fund over this period saw its entry price decline from $2.84 at 31 October 2007 to $1.90 at 31 January 2008. (It was still being promoted on the basis of an annual performance of 43.42% in the year to 31 December 2007, but if you had bought in around end October 2007, you were down almost 30%.)
On or about 30 November 2009, the Investment Manager Halbis Capital Management (Hong Kong) was replaced by Five Oceans Asset Management (Five Oceans) as the investment Manager.
So remember that past performance is no guide to future performance, the stars of one year can be the poor performers next and you need to take a long term perspective when investing in managed funds.
