There are four main stock exchanges in Australia and New Zealand:

Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)

ASX operates the Australian Stock Exchange and the Sydney Futures Exchange and facilitates trading in securities and derivatives including shares, futures, options and warrants. ASX also provides market data, for example share prices, and related information including stock market announcements and market education.

At 31 August 2013 when the All Ords Index was 5125 the domestic equity market capitalisation of ASX was AUD$1.46 trillion.

New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX)

NZX operates the three securities markets in New Zealand (NZSX, NZAX and NZDX) and is responsible for the surveillance and regulation of these markets. NZX also provides data and research across the capital market, managed fund and agricultural sectors. NZX’s total market cap is about NZD $75 billion.

National Stock Exchange of Australia (NSX)

NSX is a stock exchange set up and managed specifically to cater for the listing of small to medium enterprises. The exchange is owned by NSX Limited which is listed on ASX. NSX also operates SIM Venture Securities Exchange Limited. Market capitalization of all NSX stocks is $5 billion.

Chi-X Australia

Chi-X is the latest Stock Exchange to be licensed in Australia. Chi-X Australia offers an alternative to trading on ASX providing new order types and potential for lower costs. Chi-X Australia is owned by Chi-X Global, which also operates Chi-X Canada and Chi-X Japan. Until very recently Chi-X Global was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nomura Group. However, five additional financial institutions have now taken a minority stake in the company. The new owners are BofA Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, GETCO and Quantlab.
